Wet May for northern WA

James Casey, Sunday May 24, 2015 - 11:39 AEST

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are set for the next few days in the WA's Pilbara and Interior.

Unseasonably heavy rain for some parts of the Pilbara have occurred over the last few days. Newman Airport received 18mm to 9am, the heaviest day of rain in May since 1999. This single rain day even exceeded the month's average rainfall total.

WA's Interior has also seen some heavy rain for this time of year. Carnegie recorded it's heaviest 48 hour total for May in 18 years, picking up 22mm.

A trough over northwestern parts of WA is triggering these wetter than normal conditions. Rain and storms are likely to continue until Friday as the trough remains parked over northern parts of the state.
