Wet weekend for northeast Queensland

Some areas of QLD could see well over a month's worth of rainfall over this weekend as a low pressure trough impacts the region.

Tropical moisture will be drawn across northern and eastern parts of Queensland with a deepening trough as we move towards the end of the week. The heaviest of the rain is expected to fall over coastal and adjacent highland areas between Innisfail and Mackay, which could collect over 100mm of rain in less than 24 hours. Rainfall of this magnitude brings the risk of localised flooding.

The long term average August rainfall for Townsville, Bowen and Mackay is 16mm, 27mm and 34mm, respectively. All three of these locations are likely to exceed the monthly average by the end of the week and possibly even triple their benchmarks.

The system responsible will clear off the Queensland coast early next week, as a high pressure ridge builds in, bringing a return to dry conditions bar the odd coastal shower for Far North Queensland.
