Wet weekend for parched Perth

Perth may see its best rain since January this weekend as a burst of showers, blustery winds and storms affect southwestern parts of WA.

A pair of cold fronts and an associated low pressure system will cause the wet and windy weather over the weekend.

The first front will glance the state's southwest on Friday night, causing isolated showers and thunderstorms over parts of the South West Land Division on Saturday. The heaviest falls are likely to occur south of about Mandurah to Albany, where 10-20mm is possible by Saturday night.

The second, stronger front will reach the west coast on Sunday morning and sweep across the state's south throughout the day. This system will cause more widespread showers and thunderstorms across the southern half of WA, with severe thunderstorms likely in some areas.

Perth may see some light showers on Saturday, although the city should see some better falls and possibly a storm on Sunday morning.

The weekend as a whole could bring 5-15mm of rain to Perth's parched parks and gardens, which would be its heaviest rain in three months. If storms move over the city, this total is likely to be higher.

Perth has only received 9mm of rain since the start of February, so the city could pick up more rain this weekend that the last two and a half months combined.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
