Widespread Warnings for a Turbulent Thursday

Damaging winds will lash parts of three states and one territory today, with destructive gusts developing in some areas from tonight.

A strong cold front moving in from Western Australia will generate turbulent weather as it moves over South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT in the next 24 hours.

The system produced damaging winds as it ploughed across Western Australia yesterday. Gusts in excess of 90km/h were recorded at Cape Leeuwin, Rottnest Island, Kalamunda, Swanbourne and Norseman on Wednesday and at the small township of Forrest this morning.

Northerly winds are now strengthening ahead of the system as it moves towards the east. The strongest winds are likely to occur ahead of and with the passage of the front.

South Australia can expect to see the strongest winds this morning and afternoon. The front will reach Adelaide late afternoon and conditions should ease across the state in the evening. Rain is likely to move through the agricultural areas later in the day with the front, some of which could be accompanied by thunderstorms.

Victoria will see winds strengthen progressively through the day and into the evening as the front approaches. The strongest winds are likely to be on and south of the ranges where damaging gusts could reach 100km/h, possibly 130km/h for the Alpine areas in the state's northeast tonight. Melbourne's strongest winds will be overnight and into the early hours of Friday morning.

Wind will pick up for the alpine region in New South Wales and the ACT from this afternoon and persist on Friday. Winds gusts here could easily exceed 90km/h for the lower alpine towns and may push over 125km/h on the mountain peaks.
