Wild weather for the Southwest

A strong cold front is moving across the Southwest bringing gusty winds, heavy rain and the chance of some severe thunderstorms.

This morning some patchy but heavy showers moved across the Southwest ahead of the strong front. Witchcliffe, just outside of Margaret River, was hit the hardest receiving 7mm in less than half an hour. Cape Leeuwin also recorded some brief yet moderate falls with 3mm in an hour.

Winds have also become gusty from the north ahead of the change with the strongest winds gusting over 50 km/h.

The front is set to arrive around midday bringing more widespread, heavy showers and stronger winds. Thunderstorms will also become a risk as the front moves through. These storms are a risk of becoming severe with wind gusts over 100 km/h. Winds this strong have the potential to uproot trees and cause minor structural damage to houses.

Conditions will begin to ease this afternoon and into this evening before sunny skies return on Sunday. Another front is set to roll through bringing more rain and gusty winds on Monday morning before a broad high pressure system builds in its wake, bringing more stable conditions for the remainder of the week.

17:22 AEST Just as we forecast yesterday, a coastal trough has deepened along the NSW and southeast Qld coasts as a low in the Coral Sea continues to inch closer to Qld. The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
