Wild weather lashes the Northern NSW Coast

Severe weather is sweeping over the northern coastline of NSW as a low and trough brings heavy rain and strong winds.

Yamba has copped the full force of this low pressure system, receiving 57mm in the hour to 6am and an additional 50mm in the hour to 8am, summing up to 157mm in the 24hrs to 9am today. This rainfall now brings the monthly total to 418mm, more than double the average.

Other rainfall amounts until 6am this morning include Careys Peak (179mm) and Bellingen (142mm). Red Hill, Woolgoolga and Comboyne have all also recorded more than 100mm each.

This morning, Evans Head also recorded 82.8mm in the hour to 10am.

Damaging wind gusts have also been picking up since yesterday with Yamba recording an 87km/h wind gust at 8:20am this morning. Norah Head also recorded sustained wind speeds of 70km/h yesterday at 10:00pm.

These strong winds have also reached Sydney with the airport recording a 76km/h wind gust and Kurnell fronting a 74km/h gust early this morning.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall is present for the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter and Northern Tablelands districts. Widespread rainfall of 100-200mm is likely across the coast with winds gusting in excess of 90km/h possible through Saturday before easing into Sunday. More than 15 major rivers in the area also have flood warnings or watches associated with them.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
