Wild wind batter Melbourne

Graeme Brittain, Sunday October 9, 2016 - 16:20 AEDT

There are currently fierce winds affecting Melbourne, with a Severe Weather Warning currently in place for the entire state for damaging winds.

Large parts of the Victorian capital have experienced wind gusts in excess of 100 km/h. Early this afternoon, Avalon and Essendon Airports registered gusts of 104 km/h and 106 km/h, respectively. Melbourne's Tullamarine airport observed its highest wind gust in over five years of 107 km/h at 11:38.

These winds have brought down trees and powerlines, as well as causing havoc at the airports.

The intense winds will move eastwards through the remainder of Sunday as a strong front passes over. Although the winds over Melbourne will ease during Sunday evening, a band of squally showers will arrive early-evening.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
