Will a tropical cyclone take your name this season?

Ben Domensino, Thursday October 19, 2017 - 12:10 AEDT

The official start of Australia's tropical cyclone season is now less than a fortnight away.

The Australian region usually sees 10 to 13 tropical cyclones during an average season, which runs between November and April.

When El Nino and La Nina are not influencing our weather, as is the case at the moment, the first coastal crossing typically occurs in Australia around mid-December.

With the Bureau of Meteorology predicting that 11 tropical cyclones will form in Australian waters during the upcoming season, what are the chances that one will be named after you?

Cyclones that form in the Australian region are assigned a name from a pre-determined list. These names run in alphabetical order, alternate between male and female and continue on from the previous season.

Last season's final cyclone was Greg, so this year will feature names starting with the letter H through to about S.

Here are the names that will be given to the next 11 tropical cyclones that form in Australian waters:
- Hilda
- Irving
- Joyce
- Kelvin
- Linda
- Marcus
- Nora
- Owen
- Penny
- Riley
- Savannah

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding.  A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region.  While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
