Wind and rain batter parts of WA

A cold front brought a dramatic end to the working week as it crossed Western Australia.

Winds neared 100km/h at Rottnest Island on Friday evening, with many other parts of the Perth region, Lower West and South West seeing gusts of 70-90km/h throughout the evening and into the early hours of Saturday morning.

The rain came thick and fast, with Dwellingup seeing 41mm in the 24 hours to 9am Saturday, Bickley recording 39mm, Gosnells City saw 29mm and Perth Airport collected 22mm.

The rain also spread into adjacent districts, with the Central West, Southern Coastal, Central Wheatbelt and Great Southern also picking up some rain as well.

These falls are great news for those waiting on follow-up rain after the last rain-bearing system which crossed about a fortnight ago.

Looking ahead, there will be a front crossing later on Sunday into early Monday morning, and another front on Thursday. However, both of these fronts will be much weaker bringing substantially less wind, but also much less rain.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

11:48 AEST A prolonged rainfall event is set to bring large totals to parts of NSW and Qld from Saturday, with possible heavy falls and flooding. A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
