Winds surging across Victoria

Rob Sharpe, Saturday October 15, 2016 - 14:08 AEDT

Wind has strengthened today across Victoria, with more to come tonight.

Warm northerly winds have gusted up to 76km/h in the Melbourne area by 2pm today, a far cry from the fairly widespread gusts over 100km/h last weekend. However in the early hours of tomorrow morning wild gusts will threaten.

A severe weather warning for damaging winds with gusts above 90km/h is currently in place for many Victorian districts. About areas above 1000 metres gusts could eclipse 110km/h overnight. About low-lying areas the worst gusts should be about exposed parts of Mornington Peninsula and bayside, where gusts are likely to peak between 90-105km/h.

By the time most people are getting up on Sunday morning, winds will have eased back to a stiff breeze, except for a late afternoon and evening increase in the far south of the state.

The sodden state will also see some rain on Sunday as the secondary weaker front crosses. Thankfully only a smattering of areas will see more than 10mm.
