Windy night ahead for Tasmania

A cold front will cross Tasmania on Wednesday night, bringing a burst of wind and rain that could cause damage in some areas.


Northwesterly winds will strengthen over Tasmania as a cold front approaches from the west. A severe weather warning has been issued for damaging winds in parts of southern and eastern Tasmania during Wednesday night, where gusts could exceed 100km/h.

Showers will also accompany the front, possibly bringing 10-20mm of rain to parts of Western Tasmania overnight, but only lighter falls in the state's east.


Wind will ease in Tasmania from Thursday morning as the cold front moves over the Tasman Sea.


Strong winds will also develop in exposed areas of Victoria from Thursday morning, with damaging gusts possible over parts the state's eastern ranges.
