Winter arrives in Queensland

Parts of Queensland registered their lowest temperature in close to a year on Wednesday morning as the state experienced its first cold snap of the season.

A surge of cold air spread over Queensland on Monday and Tuesday, causing temperatures to drop in the opening days of winter. By Tuesday night, this cold mass of air combined with clear skies and light winds to send the mercury plummeting even further.

Wednesday morning's minimum temperatures dropped as low as -1.5 degrees at Roma, -1 degree at Mitchell and -0.5 degrees at Kingaroy and Injune. Other notable lows were 9.5 degrees at Brisbane and 4.3 degrees at Coolangatta. This was the coldest morning since last August for all of these locations.

But while Wednesday's chilly temperatures made it harder to get out of bed, they weren't anything Queensland hasn't seen before.

Temperatures have dropped as low as -10.6 degrees in Queensland during June, at Stanthorpe back in 1961. This was also the state's lowest temperature on record for any month, tied with the same value at Hermitage in July 1965. Brisbane's lowest June temperature on record was 4.8 degrees in 1891.

A very wet weekend for southeast Qld, northeast NSW

A low-pressure system in the Coral Sea, a deepening coastal trough and persistent easterlies will bring moisture-laden air into southeast Qld and northeast NSW will bring days of rainfall to the region. While there is not a drop of rain on the radar over southeast Qld and Northeast NSW on Friday morning, the mass of cloud associated with a low in the Coral Sea will enhance rainfall over the weekend.
