Winter warmth is spreading

Ben Domensino, Wednesday August 17, 2016 - 11:41 AEST

Temperatures are climbing across the country as winter nears its end, prompting severe fire danger ratings in the country's north and south today.

The mercury will comfortably push into the mid-thirties across northern Australia this afternoon, which is to be expected in late August. The 30 degree mark should also be reached in the southeastern corner of Western Australia for the first time this season, close to 10 degrees above average for this time of year.

These high temperatures, low humidity and gusty winds will combine to cause severe fire danger ratings in the Northern Territory's Darwin and Adelaide River fire forecast areas and Western Australia's Goldfields and Eucla districts today. Fire Weather Warnings are in place for these areas.

Other southern states are also experiencing a brief taste of spring this week as a large pool of hot air slowly spreads towards the east.

Some parts of South Australia will have the warmest weather since at least May in the next two days, including Coober Pedy, Clare and Adelaide.

Further east, Victorians will also start to notice a hint of spring as temperatures climb. Melbourne should exceeds 20 degrees on Thursday for the first time in three months and Warrnambool could hit 21 degrees for the first time since April.

While the winter warmth may be welcomed by many, an abrupt change will bring everyone back to reality by the weekend.

Temperatures will be close to 15 degrees cooler in Forrest on Friday, while Adelaide can expect to drop by ten degrees by Friday. Melbourne's see-saw week will continue as well, with the mercury dropping to the mid-teens again from Friday.
