Wintry blast brings early-season snow

Ben Domensino, Monday April 10, 2017 - 12:50 AEST

Australia's southeast is shivering through its first real taste of cold weather for the year as an impressive cover of early-season snow blankets the alps.

Cold air and brisk southerly winds spread across the nation's southeast on the weekend in the wake of a strong cold front. These wintry conditions are persisting today as a complex low pressure system moves from the Bight into the Tasman Sea.

The sun rose over a thick cover of snow in the alps this morning, revealing a scene more typical of June than early April. Parts of the alps received about 20cm of fresh cover, while snow was reported falling as far north as the Central Tablelands in New South Wales.

The cold air has also brought some of the lowest maximum and minimum temperatures so far for 2017.

Launceston's top temperature of 15.8 degrees and Mildura's 17.6 degrees on Sunday were their coldest maximums since November and October respectively. Melbourne spend much of Sunday afternoon below 13 degrees.

Temperatures reached their lowest point so far this year in many centres this morning, making it hard to get out of bed. This included Sydney (12C), Gosford (9.5C), Narrabri (8C), Dubbo (5C), Bourke (7C), Bathurst (3C), Cabramurra (-1C), Orange (2C), Falls Creek (-3C), Ferny Creek (5C), and Frankston (9C).

The heaviest rain during the 24 hours to 9am today fell in central Victoria to the west of Melbourne, where a rain gauge at Durdidwarrah recorded 100mm. Ballarat's 47mm during this time was their heaviest April fall in 28 years and the 28mm recorded at Avalon Airport is more than a month's worth of rain for this time of year.

Heavy rain has shifted across to Victoria's Gippsland this morning and will also affect parts of southeast New South Wales today. Rain may cause areas of flash flooding, before clearing most areas this evening.

The low is also causing strong and potentially damaging winds over parts of eastern Victoria and New South Wales today. This winds are initially targeting the ranges but will strengthen near the coasts as the low intensifies in the Tasman Sea from tonight. Mount Hotham recorded a gust of 115km/h at 10:17am.

The low will move away from the east coast on Tuesday allowing wind to gradually ease. However, large and dangerous surf will affect the New South Wales coast into the middle of the week.
