Wintry blast to bring snow to NSW ranges

A wintry blast is about to drop temperatures by as much as 10 degrees across New South Wales and also bring snow to the ranges, as far north as the Queensland border.

A cold front will cross the west and south of NSW during Monday and the rest of the state during Tuesday, bringing showers, small hail and mountain snow.

Snow should fall right along the ranges, developing in the south during Monday night, central parts on Tuesday morning and northern parts on Tuesday evening, possibly even reaching far southern Queensland at night.

Snow is only a small risk for most towns given that is likely to generally fall above about 1200 metres.

Guyra, on the Northern Tablelands, has a higher chance than most towns, being about 1300 metres above sea level.

Snow in Guyra during September occurs once every two or three years and last occurred in 2011.

During Wednesday the cold, unstable air will move off the coast, allowing inland NSW to dry out fairly quickly.

The trough has brought some interesting weather to NSW in the past 36 hours or so, particularly along the coastal fringe, giving those New South Welshmen a “Stark” Game of Thrones reminder: winter is coming.
