Cloud in the northern tropics in a monsoon is generating rain & gusty storms, heavy in north QLD near Tropical Cyclone Kimi, & the Top End near a low. Cloud in southern QLD, northeast NSW & WA in troughs is causing storms, some intense. Showery cloud in TAS in strong winds.

Hottest start to year in decades for west coast

14:51 AEDT Perth days for the first half of January are averaging the hottest since 1962.  Only two days this month so far have stayed below 30 degrees - and then barely - pushing the average maximum for the month so far up to 33.6 degrees, 2.5 degrees above average.
