Melbourne Cup Day weather looking fine across Victoria

Anthony Sharwood, Monday November 4, 2024 - 11:17 AEDT

Melbourne Cup Day looks like a day of perfect weather right across Victoria, which is good news for residents of that state hoping to get outside to enjoy the public holiday.

There is no such thing as a "sure thing" in either horse racing or meteorology, but it's a pretty good bet that Melbourne's famously changeable weather will be stable on Tuesday with a maximum of 27°C, clear skies and mostly light winds.

That'll make for a welcome change from the last two years:

Temperatures topped 30°C at Flemington Racecourse for the 2023 Melbourne Cup.

Melbourne Cup Day in 2022 was a miserable affair weather-wise, with showers and a maximum of just 13.3°C in Melbourne.

As mentioned, it's not only Melbourne where the weather will be like baby bear’s porridge, as in juuuuust right. Pretty much all of Victoria will enjoy benign spring weather on Tuesday.

Even forecast districts like East Gippsland and the South West – which often see coastal showers when the rest of the state is dry – are set for mild, sunny days this Tuesday, November 5.

The pattern then changes quite rapidly on Wednesday across the entire state, as a hot airmass pushes in from the northwest.

Mildura is expected to register the state's first 40-degree day of the season – and the first 40-degree day this early in November in 15 years.

Melbourne should reach 33°C on Wednesday before a late shower or two. The city will then cool off with max temps dipping back to the low 20s for a few days from Thursday onwards under the influence of cooler southwesterly winds.
