Shanghai cancels flights, closes schools as Typhoon Chanthu tracks towards city

Monday September 13, 2021 - 06:49 AEST

Schools across Shanghai have been closed and flights and public transport suspended as Typhoon Chanthu moves north across the region.

The typhoon passed by Taiwan's east coast over the weekend, disrupting transport and causing some power outages but little damage.

Initially clocking winds of more than 170 kilometres per hour, the storm was expected to gradually weaken and was downgraded from a super typhoon to a strong typhoon on Sunday evening.

The typhoon is still expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to coastal regions.

Zhejiang province near Shanghai raised its emergency response to the highest level on Sunday, closing schools and suspending flights and rail services in some cities, according to Xinhua news service.

Zhejiang also issued red alerts for flash floods in nine districts. Ningbo port, China's second-biggest container transporting hub after Shanghai, suspended operations from Sunday noon.

The port had just reopened after weeks of congestion, following Typhoon In-Fa in late July, and a COVID-19-related terminal closure in mid-August.

Torrential rains and flooding from Typhoon In-Fa caused the deaths of 302 people in Zhengzhou, a major city in the central province of Henan, including people who became trapped in the city's subway tunnels.

Up to 280mm of rain expected to fall

In Shanghai, all flights at the city's larger Pudong International Airport were cancelled from 11:00am local time, while flights from the smaller Hongqiao airport in the west of the city were to be cancelled from 3:00pm.

The city also suspended subway services on some lines serving southern districts, and said parks, outdoor tourist attractions and playgrounds would be closed on Monday and Tuesday.

School classes were also due to be suspended on Monday afternoon and Tuesday.

Official forecasts predicted rainfall of 250-280 millimetres in some areas of south-eastern Jiangsu province, Shanghai and northeastern Zhejiang.
