A cool winterâ??s night in the southeast

Tristan Meyers, Monday June 13, 2016 - 16:29 AEST

A wintery grip held the southeast last night.

A slew of locations across South Australia, Victoria and New south Wales recorded their coldest nights since last winter, including Albury Airport (-1 degree), Bellambi Pt (8 degrees), Canberra Ap (-4.5 degrees), Kerang (-1 degree), Coldstream (-2 degrees), Gluepot (-4 degrees) and Loxton (-2.1 degrees).

Adelaide wasn't spared from this cold snap, falling to 3.6 degrees, whilst Parafield dropped to one degree. Midura had its coldest morning in over two years at -1.7 degrees, also being its chilliest June night in four years.

Although this cold wasn't accompanied by snow, it did cause frost across the highlands of NSW, VIC and eastern SA. Additionally, since winds were light, the ski resorts took advantage of the conditions and fired up the snow guns for the opening weekend.

The reason for this cold snap was a large high pressure ridge, drifting slowly east over the nation. Tonight, it will be similarly cold across VIC and NSW, and far eastern SA. Moreover, Sydney could be in for a cold one, with Mascot on track for a six degree minimum - the coldest since last winter. Otherwise, western parts of the basin will continue their streak of cold nights.
