A few days of relief on the way for SA

Craig McIntosh, Tuesday July 26, 2016 - 14:16 AEST

As the last in a string of cold fronts makes its way across southern South Australia, a high pressure ridge will calm the skies until the weekend.

A run of cold fronts have been, and still are to an extent, lashing many areas of SA with damaging winds. There were reports of a tornado around Adelaide's beachside suburbs yesterday, and the strong winds are continuing into today.

Severe weather warnings for damaging winds have been frequently issued, and currently is active for the West Coast, Adelaide, Mount Lofty Ranges, Lower and Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Upper and Lower South East, Mid North and Murraylands. Wind gusts greater than 90km/h are likely across exposed coastal and elevated areas.

Around lunchtime yesterday, another front delivered gusts over 90km/h to Mount Gambier, while Neptune Island blew away the competition with a gust of 104km/h. During the afternoon, what could have been a tornado swept through the beachside suburb of Somerton Park, bringing down trees, damaging homes and delaying transport services.

Today's front will lead to a peak in both wind and rain this afternoon and evening then a broad high pressure ridge will take over. From tonight the windy conditions will take a well-earned break. However, as the working week draws to a close, another pair of fronts will approach and much of southern SA will see a wet and windy weekend.
