Autumn finally breaking across WA

Tristan Meyers, Sunday May 8, 2016 - 14:24 AEST

A long awaited relief from the summer-like heat has finally arrived across Western Australia.

Yesterday was the coldest day since last spring across Perth and its suburbs, as well as large parts of the southwest, including Esperance, Manjimup and Dwellingup.

As winds eased overnight, the coldest temperatures of 2016 were recorded across most of Perth and the southwest. The capital dipped six degrees below average to a 4.6-degree minimum. Gingin chilled toy 1.2 degrees, its coldest morning since last winter. Today, although temperatures will be near average, wind chill will make it feel three or four degrees colder.

In the Pilbara, Marble Bar ended its hottest start to May in 11 years by cooling below 20 degrees for the first time since October. Paraburdoo, Wittenoom, Newman and Karratha also had their coldest morning since last spring.

It took a deep trough combining with a strong front to finally dissipate the hot airmass which has been lingering over northern parts of the state since late spring. After delivering unseasonably heavy rainfall to the Kimberley and parts of the Pilbara and Northern Interior, the heat trough has shifted east. In its place, a strong high pressure ridge is developing, leading to noticeably cooler mornings and dry, mostly sunny conditions across the entire state for most of the coming week.

Monday is on track to be the the chilliest day since last July for Derby (28 degrees), Paraburdoo (23 degrees) and Newman (21 degrees). It will also remain cold around the capital and the rest of the southwest, although it may not feel as cold as today since bite in the air from wind will ease.
