Big chill heading north

Kim Westcott, Wednesday May 6, 2015 - 13:24 AEST

New South Wales bathed in warm sunshine yesterday and southeastern Queensland is seeing a stunner today just before the chill arrives.

It was a beautiful day for NSW yesterday, with plenty of sunshine around. Temperatures crept up mid-to high 20's, feeling more like November weather. Bega recorded its warmest May day in over 20 years as the mercury hit 27 degrees. Forbes has its warmest May day since 2000, when it also saw 27 degrees. Bourke fell just shy of hitting 30 degrees, one of the warmest in the state.

A cool change arrived with the westerly winds, in the early hours of this morning. While the sun is still shining brightly over NSW, there is a distinct crispness in the air.

Southeastern QLD will see the warmth today, with temperatures expecting to near or slightly exceed 30 degrees. Tomorrow, the sun will still be out, but like NSW today, there will be a noticeable chill in the air. Temperatures are likely to be four or five degrees colder than today.

This cold airmass which originated from Antarctica, moved over the southern states yesterday behind a very powerful cold front. Over the next few days in both QLD and NSW, mornings will become chilly as the cold air, clear skies and dry winds allow the daytime heat to escape, but the high will keep the sunshine around for many more days to come.
