Canberra facing the big chill

Kim Westcott, Saturday August 20, 2016 - 09:53 AEST

After a spell of unseasonably warm weather, it will be a different story in Canberra today.

The run of balmy Canberra days has come to an end, with Friday reaching 19 degrees shortly after lunch, making it the warmest day since early May. In fact it has been warm all week, with the last four days averaging nearly 18 degrees which is well above the August average of 14.5 degrees.

As a the cold front swept through during Friday evening and overnight into Saturday it brought thick cloud and rainy skies, with seven millimeters landing in the gauge overnight.

Despite the relatively warm morning of four degrees, the mercury will struggle to reach double digits as the pool of cold air takes up residence today.

Should today only reach the forecast maximum of nine degrees, it will be Canberra's coldest day in over three weeks - nature's not so subtle reminder that it is still winter. Combining with brisk westerlies, it will feel much colder than the temperature suggests throughout the day.

Looking into the remainder of the weekend, the sun will return although temperatures will still hover in the low-teens. Although with lighter winds it won't feel as cold outside.

Next week will be a mixed bag of weather - with a mix of warmth, sun, cloud and rain and cold.
