Chilly for this time of year in Australia's southeast

Brett Dutschke, Saturday November 9, 2019 - 05:52 AEDT

Parts of Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales were five-to-10 degrees colder than average overnight and had their coldest November night in more than a decade.

It was the coldest November night in 26 years at Eddystone Point, dipping to 3.1 degrees, coldest November night in 25 years at Hunters Hill (-0.8), and the coldest November night in at least 10 years at the top of Thredbo (-7.4 degrees), Mt Hotham (-6.3), Falls Creek (-5.6), Mt Baw Baw (-3.6), Nuriootpa (1.2), Eildon (1.5) and Combienbar (2.6).

Frost developed in areas of each state and also the ACT, affecting maturing crops.

For much of southeastern Australia winds were fresh and gusty enough to make it feel even colder for those outside at the time.

One of the strongest cold fronts since winter was the main culprit. It scattered snow on the Tasmanian highlands and as low as about 1000 metres on the Victorian and NSW alps (as much as 10-20 centimetres worth nearer the peaks). A high pressure system had squeezed its way in to partially clear skies and cause wind to ease somewhat, allowing it to get so cold.

The high will lead to another chilly night or two ahead but most places are unlikely to get as cold as last night.
