Christmas storms flare up over eastern NSW

Kim Westcott, Friday December 26, 2014 - 15:58 AEDT

Eastern NSW was treated to a stormy Christmas afternoon with rain, hail and wind.

Falls in the region of 50-100mm were widespread across the Great Diving range, with much of the rain coming down thick and fast. Tocal recorded 26mm falling over ten minutes. At Holsworthy in Sydney's southwest, 15mm fell in in ten minutes. Wollongong recorded 13mm in ten minutes.

Accompanying the rain was hail. East of Cowra, hail the size of a golf ball (4cm) was recorded. Pea-size hail was reported in the Kangaroo Valley. Winds associated with these storms gusted to 60-70km.

The temperature plummeted quickly as the line of showers and storms rolled in, with many suburbs dropping 10-13 degrees over a few short hours. Some places saw the mercury fall quickly, with Orange losing four degrees in only 16 minutes.

Northern NSW will see showers and storms again today and into the weekend as a low pressure trough lingers, with further heavy falls expected.
