An uncomfortable night ahead for Melbourne and northern Victoria

Anthony Duke, Monday December 22, 2014 - 13:43 AEDT

Residents of Melbourne could be ditching the duvets tonight with a very warm night ahead forecast.

A trough is moving into western parts of Victoria today drawing hot air from the nation's interior ahead of it. Couple that with increasingly cloudy skies and persistent northerly winds and conditions are lining up for it to be a very warm and uncomfortable night. Melbourne city may only fall to 22 degrees, potentially the warmest night of the season.

Last night the Mallee and Wimmera regions saw temperatures ranging seven to 10 degrees warmer than average. Murray river towns, Mildura and Swan Hill had their hottest night since Februrary failing to cool below 24 and 22 degrees respectively. Tonight is forecast to be another hot one in northern Victoria under similar conditions after last night's heat in the northwest. The Northern Country will feel the heat as temperatures are forecast to only drop to the low twenties by the early morning.

Fortunately for those without fans, a cold front will bring cooling conditions on Tuesday evening leading to a cool but somewhat refreshing night into Wednesday.
