Conditions allowed to settle in Tasmania

A complex low which has been impacting parts of Tasmania has finally made its way into the Tasman allowing conditions to ease.

Tasmania has been endured wintry conditions for the past few days as a deep cut-off low squeezed through Bass Strait.

The coldest conditions fell on Thursday and even though Friendly beach was the warmest location in the state, it still fell 4 degrees below average. Cape Sorell was the warmest location in comparison to the long term average, but still fell 2.1 degrees below the March average.

Some of the most bitterly cold places included Launceston Airport and Scottsdale which dropped almost 8 degrees below average with maximum temperatures of just 14.9 and 13.5 degrees respectively.

At the warmest part of the day, Launceston felt more like 11 degrees due to wind chill, however there were times throughout the day that felt more like 7.5 degrees.

Rainfall was also persistent in the later stages of the week. Tasman Island picked up the heaviest rainfall with 86.6mm in the 72 hours to 9am today. In fact 84mm collected in the bucket in just 24 hours to 9am on Friday 27th. This means that they received 127% of the March average in just one day. This is not surprising however due to its exposed position.

On the mainland of Tassie, Lake Margaret Power Station collected the heaviest three day total with 62.2mm, meanwhile Low Head received their heaviest three day total for any month since 2004.

The low has moved well east into the Tasman Sea now which has allowed conditions to ease. Cool air in its wake is lingering however making conditions still feel a little crisp.
