Crisp morning in Canberra

Guy Dixon, Friday September 19, 2014 - 10:05 AEST

Canberra shivered through its coldest September temperature since
2012, plummeting to minus four.

A cold front which moved over southeastern parts of the nation
yesterday dragged a broad cold airmass with it. This airmass
contributed to cool temperatures for much of the nation's southeast
yesterday, although a brisk southwesterly flow reduced the chances of
a freezing morning most locations.

Further inland however, these winds were much lighter which allowed
the coolest air to sink and settle at surface level. As a result, the
nation's capital experienced a bitter night where the mercury fell to
a low of 4.3 degrees at the airport, a huge 7.5 degrees below
average.

The last time it got this cold in September was in 2012 when Canberra
Airport endured a brutal three night spell of temperatures below
minus four degrees. In fact, the first of this three day spell
dropped to almost minus seven.

As the front moves further east and a high pressure ridge takes hold
in the coming days, the risk of cold minimum temperatures will
decrease. A low pressure trough moving across the nation mid-way
through next week will draw warm air from the interior over the
southeast leading to maximum temperatures at least seven degrees
above average.
