Darkness descending on Australia

Ben Domensino, Tuesday March 20, 2018 - 16:55 AEDT

The March Equinox occurs in Australia on Wednesday morning, marking the end of the astronomical summer in the southern hemisphere.

The equinox occurs at 3:15am Australian Eastern Daylight Time on Wednesday, around which time the sun moves over the equator and passes from the sky above the southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere.

There are roughly equal hours of day and night around the world on the March Equinox.

Following this date, nights will continue to get longer and days shorter in the southern hemisphere during the next three months as we approach the winter solstice.

While meteorologists in Australia define the seasons by grouping calendar months together, other parts of the world use the equinox and solstice dates to mark the change in seasons.
