Dry winds elevate the risk of fire in the Top End

With strong winds and temperatures on the rise, there has been severe fire danger declared for the Darwin and Adelaide River and Northern Fire Protection Area fire forecast areas.
Temperatures over the Top End this month have not been out of the ordinary. Darwin's average maximum temperature this July has been 31.1 degrees, only half a degree above the average. Likewise, the past couple of days have been below average at about 30 degrees for both Sunday and Monday, whereas today is forecast to reach 33 degrees.
Wind speeds have also been increasing in the north of Australia with a ridge of high pressure strengthening over the region. These dry winds, moderate-to-fresh in strength, may help to quickly spread any fires. At 11am, Darwin had already recorded a wind gust of 37km/h.
Conditions should remain warm and gusty at times tomorrow. This could see the increased fire risk continue for parts of the Top End.
Advice from the Bushfires NT and NT Fire and Rescue Service recommends that anyone in the area should keep up to date with the latest fire and weather situation and have a plan if an emergency does arise.
