Early autumn rain soaks western WA

Anthony Duke, Monday March 2, 2015 - 07:28 AEDT

Much needed rain has arrived in Western Australia overnight, with some places receiving more rain in 6 hours than in the last 6 months.

Heavy thundery showers produced torrential downpours and strong wind gusts across the Central West and Gascoyne districts of WA overnight. Geraldton has picked up 58mm since 10pm WST last night, more than it's September to February rains combined. Most of this fell in downpours with as much as 17mm in a 10 minute period. For Geraldton, this is best falls in 24 hours since June 2012 and the wettest March day in 15 years.

Other towns received heavy falls too with 84mm at Gutha West, 75mm at South Holmwood and 61mm at Bellendaine. A little further-afield Meekathara surpassed its March average collecting 33mm.

Some strong gusts were seen too with 80km/h recorded at Gutha West and 74km/h at Meekathara.

This batch of storms is now decaying, but there is still a risk of storms developing in the coming days. The area of rain and storms is likely to retreat north to the inland Pilbara towards the end of the week.
