Kim Westcott, Sunday February 1, 2015 - 14:14 AEDT

Wooly jumpers and umbrellas were the theme for the first month of the year throughout eastern Victoria.

During January over 142mm fell into the gauge at Combienbar, bringing the wettest January in 19 years, with nearly double the monthly average. Similarly, Mt Nowa Nowa saw the wettest January since 1996, recording 135mm and the fourth highest in the state.

Omeo had a wet and cool month, with the the coolest and wettest January in a decade. For three weeks out of the month, Omeo had below average daytime temperatures. While big falls were not recorded, it rained close to half of the month.

Gelantipy had an average day maximum of 22 degrees (two degrees below average) during January, making it the third coolest in over twenty years. A week-long spell of cool temperatures ended the month, during this time the mercury dropped to 11 degrees, the coldest January day in four years.

To start off February, cool and showery conditions are likely for today with the showers easing into Monday. Tuesday should be mostly dry throughout the district with showers returning on Wednesday. The warmer weather will kick off towards the end of the week ahead of a low pressure trough.
