First rain in over 60 days for Perth

Parts of southwestern WA have seen their heaviest rain since September amid persistent scorching heat.

Perth was provided a brilliant lightning show this morning by a series of thunderstorms. By 9am there was 5.2mm recorded in the gauge, the first rain since late November.

Nearby there were heavier falls, with Manjimup recording 12mm, its heaviest rain since September. Albany Airport, Jandakot and Wandering all joined the plethora of towns with their biggest falls since November. The reason for the thunderstorms was the combination of a hot and moist airmass with the placement of a trough along the WA coastline.

The trough will linger in the region for most of the week, providing a low to moderate risk of showers or thunderstorms in Perth on all days except Saturday. Due to the lingering trough, the heat will also stick around.

The region has seen above average temperatures since Sunday and they are likely to continue each day until next Thursday, making an 11 day run. During this period Perth will probably see an average maximum of about 36 degrees.
