Frost to bite the bunny in Canberra

Rob Sharpe, Saturday April 19, 2014 - 10:06 AEST

Canberra's coldest morning since spring will see the Easter bunny hiding eggs on ice.

Good Friday was a spectacular day in the nation's capital with a sunny top of 20 degrees. Last night a cold front moved through, bringing a cooler airmass for the rest of the Easter weekend.

The arrival of the colder air mass will limit today's maximum to only 17 degrees, with people reaching for more winter-like clothing. Tonight, winds will become light and the temperature will plummet to around zero degrees for the first time since November.

The Easter bunny may find it hard to get out of its burrow early in the morning, as this will only be the third frosty Easter Sunday morning in Canberra in the last decade.

Thankfully for those hunting for the eggs the temperature will rise quickly under sunny skies, but only to a cool top of 16 degrees.

Next week will be fairly mild in the nation's capital, but with a bit more cloud around from Easter Monday. Any leftover chocolate will be able stay in the pantry without fear of melting as the mercury will only reach around 20 degrees each day of the working week. There is also no fear of frosty mornings after Easter Monday for over a week.

A very wet weekend ahead for NSW

14:35 AEST Rainfall is set to intensify over the weekend and early next week, with hundreds of millimetres in just three days possible across parts of the central NSW coastline.  The heavy rainfall forecast at the end of this week will follow a prolonged period of rainfall which began on Tuesday, generated by a coastal trough lingering off the NSW coast for days.  Nord’s Wharf Oval in the Hunter Valley recorded 93mm in the 24 hours leading up to 9am Wednesday, May 5.
