Gusty storms bring gloomy weekend to Victoria

Jacobus Cronje, Saturday March 24, 2018 - 15:53 AEDT

A series of low pressure troughs have brought thundery showers to western and central Victoria on Saturday, with most of the rain associated with these systems falling over southern parts.

So far, places like Ballarat, Kilmore Gap, Melbourne and Ferny Creek have picked up 20-30mm of rain, with 10-20mm measured over centres like Essendon, Mangalore and Avalon.

The systems are expected to linger over central and eastern parts including Melbourne, bringing further rainfall into early Sunday.

A weaker then strong cold front will impact the state from early on Sunday. Although modest rainfall totals of around 10-15mm should fall over the southern parts of the state, damaging winds gusts are expected over the South West, parts of Central, East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland forecast districts.

The Bureau of Meteorology have already issued a Severe Weather Warning for damaging westerly wind gusts over these districts, as well as gale-force wind warnings for Port Phillip, Western Port, West Coast, Central Coast and Central Gippsland Coast.
