Heavy rain and gusty winds head for VIC

Kim Westcott, Monday June 20, 2016 - 13:52 AEST

While the rain has eased over Queensland and New South Wales, eastern Victoria is now receiving a burst of rain and wind.

Eastern parts of VIC felt the first drops of rain during Sunday evening, and there is more to come throughout today as a deepening low and trough is set to reach peak intensity this afternoon and evening.

In the 24 hours to 9am Monday, heavy falls were recorded at Joker Creek with 50mm and Point Hicks with 51mm. Throughout the Cann and Genna; Mitchell, Snowy, Tambo and Mitta Mitta catchments widespread falls were generally between 25 to 45mm.

Throughout today, rain will be heaviest in the East Gippsland with widespread falls around 40mm expected, although there could be isolated pockets of heavier rain. Rain will dramatically taper off further west, with locations west of Melbourne only likely to see five millimeters or less.

Accompanying the rain in the east, winds will be gusty. Mount Hotham has already recorded an 80km/h gust this morning. Winds will increase this afternoon as the low pressure system intensifies and moves offshore, with the East Gippsland coast likely to see the highest wind gusts.

As this system moves further into the Tasman Sea during the early hours of Tuesday, both wind and rain will ease. The drier weather will not last for very long, with another belt of rain expected for the North East and surrounds later on Tuesday and into Wednesday as a trough and front approach.

There are several warnings for VIC currently and residents in these areas are advised to stay up to date with the latest forecasts. You can find the latest warnings at http://www.weatherzone.com.au/warnings.jsp?lt=wzstate&lc=vic
