Heavy rain in southwest WA, plenty more to come

Guy Dixon, Friday July 15, 2016 - 12:32 AEST

Persistent showers overnight have delivered some of the heaviest rain in a year to southwestern WA.

A front and associated front caused showers to develop last night, persisting throughout the evening before increasing into this morning.

The most substantial rainfall was recorded at Jarrahwood where 75mm accumulated to 9am today, making it the heaviest 24 hour total in 12 months. Happy Valley and Yoongariliup followed close behind with 69mm and 67mm respectively.

Pre-frontal northerly winds increased as this front approached, particularly over the coast where Cape Naturaliste clocked maximum wind gusts of 89km/h. Cape Leeuwin recorded gusts of 85km/h followed by 83km/h at Rottnest Island.

The heavy rain and gusty conditions are likely to continue with a series of fronts moving over the region in the coming days. The South West district will likely see the highest accumulated rainfall figures with another 50-100mm collecting by the end of the weekend.
