Icy morning in Western Australia

Joel Pippard, Sunday July 12, 2020 - 15:04 AEST

Parts of Western Australia have had their coldest morning in years on Sunday before a series of fronts bear down on the region this week.

Albany has shivered through only its fourth freezing morning in 78 years of records on Sunday morning, dipping to 0.0 degrees. This was also its coldest morning of any month for 14 years. To the northwest, Bunbury was only a fraction warmer, reaching 0.1 degrees on Sunday morning, its coldest morning of any month for 3 years.

Collie East was the coldest location in the state, reaching a numbing -2.3 degrees, its coldest July morning in 4 years. It was also the coldest July morning in 5 years for Hopetoun (0.8C), and in 4 years for Bridgetown (-1.1C), Katanning (1.9C), and Esperance (4.2C).

This freezing morning was a result of very dry airmass, brought on by a string of cold mornings leading up to Sunday under a slow-moving high pressure system.

This system is now moving east, ahead of a series of fronts crossing the region from Monday, the most significant of which will arrive late Monday and early Tuesday. This front will bring gusty winds, thunderstorms, and fast-moving but heavy showers over the west and south coasts of WA. Mornings will likely be well above average during this week with the wind, cloud, and high humidity.

A very wet weekend ahead for NSW

14:35 AEST Rainfall is set to intensify over the weekend and early next week, with hundreds of millimetres in just three days possible across parts of the central NSW coastline.  The heavy rainfall forecast at the end of this week will follow a prolonged period of rainfall which began on Tuesday, generated by a coastal trough lingering off the NSW coast for days.  Nord’s Wharf Oval in the Hunter Valley recorded 93mm in the 24 hours leading up to 9am Wednesday, May 5.
