Impressive falls for inland QLD

Guy Dixon, Sunday September 18, 2016 - 12:16 AEST

Areas of heavy rain have further exacerbated the flood risk over inland QLD, with some places picking up the heaviest September rainfall in 30 years.

Flood warnings are in place for parts of the Channel Country, Maranoa and Warrego, Darling Downs and Granite Belt, Central West and Central Highlands and Coalfields with a flood watch over the North West.

It is in these districts where over 80mm accumulated within 24 hours to 9am today. The heaviest rain generally extended from the North West, where May Downs received 62mm, to the Maranoa and Warrego, where Fairfield picked up 70mm.

Biddenham (Maranoa and Warrego) managed to top the list with an impressive 86mm to 9am, followed closely by neighbouring Roma, which collected its heaviest September rainfall in three decades with 61mm. This also goes down as the heaviest single day of rain since March 2014 for Roma. Cannington's 50mm marks the heaviest 24 hour total in over four years.

Heavy rain is likely once again today along a low pressure trough, with the heaviest falls expected over from the Central West to the Darling Downs and Granite Belt where a further 40-60mm could fall. To make matters worse, another round of heavy rain is on the cards for Tuesday over inland catchments where 30-60mm is a chance.

Flooding will remain a significant risk for quite some time. To keep up with current warnings head to http://www.weatherzone.com.au/warnings.jsp?lt=wzstate&lc=qld
