Intense thunderstorms hit NE NSW, SE QLD

Severe thunderstorms caused damage in northeastern New South Wales and southeast Queensland on Sunday and should do so again during the next few days.

On Sunday afternoon some of the most intense storms were in the Warwick area where they produced four-and-a-half centimetre diameter hail at Maryvale and 64 millimetres of rain in 30 minutes at Harrisville.

Just across the border four-centimetre diameter hail and 87km/h wind gusts were reported at Lismore and 43mm in 30 minutes at Repentance. Storms were intense enough to cause the roof of the Lismore hospital to collapse.

Later in the day storms developed and travelled further east, affecting the Byron Bay, Gold Coast and Brisbane areas.

On Monday the Lismore, Byron Bay, Gold Coast and Brisbane areas will be relatively quiet as the main storm area shifts further north with help from a weakening low pressure trough. Storms will in general will be less intense, although some are still likely to be severe enough to cause damage.

During Tuesday and Wednesday instability will increase again as another trough moves in from the west, bringing another burst of severe storms over a northeastern NSW and southeast and central Queensland.

A very wet weekend ahead for NSW

14:35 AEST Rainfall is set to intensify over the weekend and early next week, with hundreds of millimetres in just three days possible across parts of the central NSW coastline. The heavy rainfall forecast at the end of this week will follow a prolonged period of rainfall which began on Tuesday, generated by a coastal trough lingering off the NSW coast for days. Nord’s Wharf Oval in the Hunter Valley recorded 93mm in the 24 hours leading up to 9am Wednesday, May 5.
