Last significant rain for weeks in the nation's southwest

The rain has tumbled down across southwestern parts of Australia during the past seven weeks, but that trend will finish today.

The southwestern corner of Australia has been one of few regions in Australia to experience wetter than usual conditions across July and August to date.

Bridgetown has remarkably set new rainfall records at the 20 year old site for both July and August with almost 400m evenly spread across the two months. Similarly Busselton has seen 335mm in the seven week spell. This is great rainfall after a slow start to winter, with paltry June falls.

Rain is currently spreading across the southwest today, but it is likely to be the last significant rainfall for some time.

High pressure is set to take hold of the region in the coming week and the early indications are that it will continue to limit the impact of rain-bearing systems in the following week.

Looking further ahead and rainfall is likely to be near or just below average. However, when taking into account that May to September are by far the wettest months of the year in this region, this could be the last of the significant spells of wet weather for some time.
