Late-spring chill in QLD

Queensland is experiencing a spell of cool late-spring weather this week after enduring a warm and muggy start to November.

A notably hot air mass lingering over Queensland earlier this month was replaced by much cooler and drier air, as a southerly change swept across the state on Wednesday and Thursday.

In Brisbane, the temperature reached 30 degrees or more for five consecutive days ending on Wednesday this week. This was the city's longest spell of days over 30 degrees this early in the season since 2001.

Brisbane's warm run came to an abrupt end on Thursday morning when the cool change reached the city. By Friday morning, the mercury had dipped to 16 degrees, which is two below average for a minimum temperature at this time of year.

Further west, Roma registered a low of 6.5 degrees on Friday morning, which was its lowest temperature this late in spring for 12 years. Miles (8.2C) and Gayndah (10.9C) also had their coldest morning this late in spring for 10 years on Friday.

Roma's low of 6.5 degrees was the lowest temperature observed in Queensland so far this month. The state's record low for November is 0.0 degrees, which occurred at Stanthorpe and Applethorpe in 2006.
