Melbourne set to sizzle

Melburnians will need to dust off the fans in preparation for the upcoming heat.

Today will see mostly sunny skies, with temperatures peaking in the high 20's about Geelong and Mt Dandenong, low-to-mid 30's for Melbourne and surrounds, and hitting the mid 30's in Tullamarine and Watsonia. About the bayside area, a weak afternoon seabreeze will bring some cooling.

In the evening, winds will shift to a hot northerly direction and steadily increase, with the mercury expected to only drop to 25 degrees overnight. If the city remains above 25 degrees, it could be the warmest November night since 1901, where the mercury remained above 26.2 degrees and air conditioners had not been invented yet.

Thursday will warm up very quickly, hitting the high 30's by the afternoon, which could be the hottest day since January.

A gusty southerly cool change will reach Melbourne later in the afternoon, bringing a sharp drop in temperature as well as the chance of a thundery shower for the commute home.

It will be much more comfortable sleeping conditions after the cool change passes, with Melbourne dropping down to 12 degrees overnight into Friday morning, with a partly cloudy and mild day to end the working week.

Over the weekend it will be much more spring-like with dry, mild and mostly sunny conditions prevailing.
