Melbourne's wettest post-Easter commute in 39 years

A cold front sweeping across Victoria this morning has made returning to work after the long weekend more gloomy than usual for Melburnians.

It is always a tough ask getting out of bed and back to work after a chocolate-filled four day long weekend. The last thing people want to deal with on their first commute back to work after Easter is bad weather.

Unfortunately for those in Melbourne, showers moved in from the west just before sunrise and stuck around until after 9am.

In the city, 6mm of rain fell between 8am and 9am making it the wettest return to work after Easter since at least 1975.

Wet weather wasn't the only issue as strong northerly winds gusted to 54km/h at 9am and over 70km/h earlier in the morning.

This morning's shower brought Melbourne's running rainfall total for April to 52mm, just short of the long term average. If the city gains another 5.8mm by the end of the month, this will be the first time Melbourne has received the average rainfall during a calender month since September.

Looking ahead, showers will be isolated around the Melbourne area today before clearing later this afternoon. The next chances of rain will be on Thursday and Saturday with the passage of weak fronts.

If the city has not reached the monthly average of 57.3mm by the end of the coming weekend, weather statisticians will wait nervously to see if the next rain-bearing system arrives before 9am on Wednesday 30th April. Early indications based on computer model guidance are that it may come right down to the line.
