New Zealand's North Island sitting under soggy skies

Kim Westcott, Wednesday August 10, 2016 - 13:43 AEST

Heavy rain is pounding New Zealand's North Island, and the next round of rain is not far behind.

Heavy rain is set to continue for parts of Auckland, Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel Peninsula today and into early Thursday. With up to an additional 120mm on what has already fallen, parts of these regions are facing rapidly rising rivers, dangerous driving conditions and surface flooding.

The warning for heavy rain has since been cancelled for Northland after yesterday's deluge, but there still remains a risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms until this afternoon.

Yesterday, more than 40mm was recorded in 24 hours at Whitianga Airport, with August already producing 93mm, two-thirds of the monthly average. At Whangarei, 30mm was collected in the bucket, while Kerikeri saw 19mm.

The heavy rain is a result of a slow-moving low pressure system. This system has been building in the Tasman Sea since late last week, gradually intensifying as it encountered warmer northern waters with instability further fuelled by a pool of upper cold air.

Looking further ahead, heavy showers will begin to ease during Thursday for the North Island, but another burst of rain won't be far behind.

A large cold front will sweep over the South Island during Friday, bringing another round of wind and rain for the North Island during Saturday morning.
