NSW basks in spring warmth: Will it last?

Thomas Hough, Sunday July 23, 2017 - 12:19 AEST

Over the next few days parts of NSW will experience significantly warmer-than-average days with high pressure over the region bringing westerly winds from the interior. Some places are set to see the mercury rise six-to-seven degrees celsius above their July average.

Sydney is likely to reach about 22 degrees today and Wednesday, nearly six degrees above the average of 16.4. Wilcannia is looking to beat this with a likely 25-degree maximum on Wednesday, a massive seven degrees above the average for this time of year. Even Canberra, which has seen its fair share of freezing temperatures this month, will see daytime temperatures two-to-three degrees above average, with a likely top of 15 today.

Will this unseasonable warmth last? Models indicate that this period of spring-like warmth isn't likely to last long, with temperatures looking like they will drop back down to around to about average for next week.

So for those working tomorrow, today is the perfect day to head outside and enjoy the glorious weather!

Warmth will return next weekend but only briefly. Next Saturday has potential to be the warmest July day in about 40 years in Cobar (reaching about 25 degrees)and about 15 years in Trangie (likely warming past 23 degrees).
