Queensland's wet weekend wrap up

James Casey, Friday June 17, 2016 - 12:54 AEST

Heavy rain and gusty storms to affect western parts of Queensland and along the coast from about the Townsville area down to NSW border as a low pressure trough crosses the state.

Thundery rain will make their way across western parts of QLD on Friday delivering widespread 5-15mm. The area around Cunnamulla and Eromanga should see the heaviest falls, with up to 25mm.

On Saturday the trough will deepen and make its way east across the state. Widespread falls of 15-20mm will extend from the Charleville to Urandangie areas. The heaviest falls should occur in the Central West and North West where it could exced 80mm. Thunderstorms ahead of the trough have the risk of sparking up in the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders. These storms have the potential to bring damaging wind gusts.

However, the most intense rain and storms will occur on Sunday as the trough deepens along the coast, all while a second band of rain forms over already saturated inland parts of the state. Coastal regions from about the Townsville area to the Coolangatta area, including inland to about the Taroom area, have the good chance of seeing over 40mm. Pockets of 80-100mm are a chance along the Central Coast. Inland areas from about Longreach to around St George could see up to 80-100mm with a widespread 30-40mm likely.

Thunderstorms are most likely along the coastal fringe, from about the Bundaberg to Townsville regions. These storms have the potential to become severe with damaging wind gusts and torrential downpours which could lead to flash flooding.

The trough will move offshore on Monday allowing respite from the soggy weather. A ridge of high pressure will build in its wake bringing calmer conditions with sunny skies for the start of the working week.
