Shivering Sunday morning across NSW

Joel Pippard, Sunday July 15, 2018 - 12:45 AEST

Parts of New South Wales have frozen through their coldest morning in 60 years with more to come.

Both Parkes and Cowra have set new all-time coldest minimum temperature records with the mercury dropping to -6.6 and -5.8 degrees respectively. Both sites opened back in 1958.

Dubbo's low of -6.0 degrees was its coldest night in 78 years while Lithgows -9.3 degrees was the coldest its been there since 1972.

Further north, Gunnedah's minimum of -6.6 degrees was its coldest July morning in over 70 years of records. A low of -8.1 degrees made Bathurst as cold as it was back in July 1972.

A very cool, dry airmass has combined with clear skies and light winds under high pressure to deliver this record cold morning.

Another freezing morning is expected on Monday as the airmass dries out even further, possibly bringing temperatures close to what they were this Sunday. A trough and cold front moving over on Tuesday will push out the high pressure and make the mornings a bit more mild.
