Significant regional cooling with a dusting of frost expected for NSW

Jacobus Cronje, Tuesday July 12, 2016 - 12:14 AEST

A couple of cold mornings are in store for much of New South Wales from Tuesday, with some areas likely to receive the odd snowflake and frost.

In the wake of a strong cold front that will have swept across the southern and southeastern parts of the state tomorrow, lingering southwesterly winds and a building high pressure system will lead to significant regional cooling.

Stretching all the way from the Riverina up to the northern parts of the Upper Western, minimum temperatures of around 1 to 2 degrees are likely in the early hours of the morning tomorrow and Thursday. Daytime temperatures are also not expected to make it to 20 degrees across the region until Sunday.

In the southern parts of the state, evening and early morning temperatures will likely remain quite low into the weekend, with Wagga Wagga expected to drop to near freezing on Saturday morning.

However, the Blue Mountains, Tablelands and South West slopes and Plains will be feeling the brunt of the cold weather over the next couple of days. Below-freezing morning temperatures of around -2 degrees, also bringing frost, are expected for places like Orange, Bathurst, Young and Goulburn from today until Saturday.

Starting from the north on Sunday, daytime temperatures will begin to rise steadily, reaching a top of between 18 and 20 degrees in places like Cobar and Bourke.

From early next week, temperatures are set to recover steadily by a couple of degrees across the region as the high pressure system settles in over the southeastern parts of the country.
