Southern NT to get a soaking

Tristan Meyers, Thursday June 16, 2016 - 14:49 AEST

An unseasonable soaking is going to impact southern parts of the NT, including parts of the Barkly, Lasseter, Tanami and Simpson.

Tennant Creek and Alice Springs are among the areas that have a good chance to get about 10-20mm. The last time these areas have seen this amount of rain during June was 2008, potentially even farther back for some locations.

However, totals in excess of 25mm are a chance for northern parts of the Simpson and southern parts of the Barkly. This is fairly rare - these areas generally only expect 5-10mm or less during the entire month.

Although the radar may not show it, a 48 hour rain event will start from tomorrow morning as showers, rain and some storms, easing into the evening. Heavier pockets of rain will develop on Saturday in eastern parts of the Simpson and Barkly. Flash flooding is a risk throughout this period due to heavy rainfall rates on dry soil.

This will be the second time this year that this part of the NT has had unseasonable rain - the first being a rainband that brought widespread 10-20mm in early May. These events are most likely influenced by the warmer-than average waters in the Indian Ocean. As low pressure troughs move from west to east across the nation, their extra moisture content drawn in from these waters has lead to rains reaching usually dry areas at unusual times of year.
